MARCHing into Spring Learning!

In like a lamb and out like a lion! March through this activity roundup, perfect for at-home learning from across the web. Inspired by everything from St. Patrick’s Day fun to Springtime Science.

For Ages 0+

From Crafting a Fun Life, check out these easy-to-make St. Patrick’s Day sensory bottles for infants and toddlers. Features mix-ins from glitter and gold coins to rainbow poms poms and foil shamrocks.

We recommend using Voss brand water bottles for these types of sensory bottles. Not only do they showcase the items inside, but they are easy to handle for little ones. Also for liquid fillers; a combination of 1 part light corn syrup and 3 parts water.

For Ages 2+

From No Time for Flashcards, your child can create their very own spring bouquet while growing their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. All you will need for this simple activity is a colander from your kitchen and flowers picked from your garden or artificial flowers from a local hobby store.

We recommend selecting an assortment of flowers and discussing their unique qualities with your child. Comparing size, color, texture, and whatever else they may notice. Before creating their bouquet, encourage them to sort the flowers by similar attributes. Grouping them by color or size or even scent.

For Ages 3-5

From The Best Ideas for Kids, learn about chemical reactions while creating spring blooms. This experiment mixes baking soda and vinegar to show how bases and acids react together. Kids can add their own touch by choosing the color of their flower blossoms with food coloring.

We recommend asking open-ended questions before, during, and after the experiment to help them think critically about the experiment. (i.e. What do you think will happen when we mix these? How big do you think it’s going to be? What if we mix more than one color next time? etc.)

For Ages 5+

From Feel Good Teaching, your child will experiment and problem-solve to build a leprechaun trap this St. Patrick’s Day. Using a plethora of materials, this S.T.E.A.M. activity will provide endless opportunities to think creatively and test the cause-and-effect reactions of their traps.

We recommend making special note of the project constraints with your child. Ask them to explain the details back to you to ensure they fully understand the project criteria and goals. Allow your child time to sketch their trap ideas and discuss with you what they think may or may not work before building.
